Versatile, potent and ready to conquer any challenge, the USMC Scorching Sands Recurved Fixed Blade Knife easily earns its "USMC" moniker. Like a United States Marine, this fierce, officially licensed weapon is always primed and ready for action, no matter how harsh the conditions or unfamiliar the territory. It boasts a gently recurved 6" stainless steel blade enhanced with a rugged stonewashed finish and carefully honed to a razor sharp edge. Fittingly, "USMC" is etched delicately at the blade base. Ergonomically contoured and finely textured, the desert sand tan G10 handle always affords a sure grip, even in swampy, humid locales. At 11 5/8" long overall, the Scorching Sands Fixed Blade knife is amply sized for day to day cutting jobs, demanding field tasks and practically anything you throw at it, yet it's comfortable and easy to transport, thanks to the included black belt sheath and integrated lanyard hole. Made of resilient, water resistant nylon, the heavy duty sheath won't tear or fray in thorns, briers or other back country hazards. Heavy, thick, and sharp. Love the stonewash finish. Thanks BudK!
There appears to be two versions of this knife with the same stock number and price. The version I purchased does not have serrations on the spine of the blade. This review relates to the plain version, although the comments are likely applicable to both versions.
On first sight, this knife represents a fairly decent price-performance mix, based on observable features. The type and quality of the steel, and its performance under rigorous conditions, is unknown.
The knife itself weighs 12.5 oz, and the knife plus sheath weigh 15.2 oz.
This is a full tang knife. The tang and spine are a very respectable 0.175" thick. The finish could be described as "industrial skirmish." The balance point is just aft of the blade-tang transition. The thumb rest serrations are aggressive but not injurious. The total handle thickness (including the blade) is 0.650". The handle slabs are slightly thin, at 0.238" each. Although the grip is satisfactory, it might be improved with a material having a rubberized texture. The serrated inlets on the tail end of the handle and the lanyard hole on the tip of the tang might be used to lash the knife to a pole. For someone with 9 inch hands (measured around the palm at the knuckles), the handle is just a hair on the short side, although still quite usable.
The sheath is basic, but aesthetic and very well constructed. The belt loop is massively oversize, capable of accommodating a 5 inch belt. There is no drain hole or attachment point for a leg tie. A small, translucent plastic insert inside the sheath protects it against damage from the knife tip. However, nothing retains this insert, and it will quickly be lost.
This knife would be a good choice for a day hike or jaunt in the woods (chopping comes to mind, due to the mass). CQC encounters would be better served with more traditional fighting knives (something lighter and more agile).
I may have been premature to comment on the handle, now that I have one of my own I can see that this handle is actually far better than I had thought. It actually has 2 grip positions that work for either speed (if you choke up) or power (if you move your hand back) and will never slide out of your hand with the finger grips and scales. This is also built to last, the tang is so thick that I can not think of anything that would make it brake easily. Once the price was lowered I had to get one and I would recommend that you do the same.
This knife has a good weight to it and a vicious recurved blade, comes sharp as a razor. The handle feels like it would be a bit uncomfortable if it were to be wielded for an extended period but that could just be me. The stainless steel is thick enough that it will stand up to almost anything. This is a knife to back you up when you need it
