First time I picked it up it felt like a very old friend. Just right in every way. I have to mention the sheath. A lot of thought and design went into the construction of the sheath. Silent and well thought out touches And you need not open your belt to put it securely on the belt anywhere you want.

I have personally owned one for over 10 years and couldn't be more stocked with it. I have bought atleast 20 of them to give as gifts to friends who all have nothing but positive things to say about them. Just buy one and see how wonderful they really are.

I got this in a mystery pack, it was able to make a clean cut through 550 paracord with moderate effort out of box, the main blade seems sturdy, it could always be sharper. The saw back seems sharp, snags itself on things. I wrapped the handle in 550 cord and that made a much better feel to it. This will be my new EDC for awhile.

But the sheath scratches the surface on each side every time you put it in the sheath and pull it out because it's way too tight due to the design but it is a durable sheath and overall I'm still happy and would recommend this because of the quality of the knife and great price
Dec 21, 2017

I purchased and mounted it on my back pack strap, excellent knife, well built for the price. This is the second one I have purchased, one for camping bag and other for bug out bag

This may be my favorite knife minus the grip but its sharp, well weighted, down right cool only thing i would change would be the grip its cheap plastic that broke after a few trees

I got this knife for Christmas and it's awesome. It has a nice feel to the handle, and the sheeth is amazing. The blade is sharp and the point is devastating. The sawback serations are super sharp and can take on almost any task. Great knife over all. Thank you Budk!

The sheath and handle of mine came in black and the blade wasn't very sharp. Thankfully I was able to sharpen it very easily and I used it to make a hiking stick. Totally worth it and it doesn't get dull easily.
Oct 09, 2016

Love the look, feel, price. Blade very hard to sharpen due to shape and blade material. Would buy again. Look forward to more from M48.

this is one heavy piece of steel. Very solid and devastating! i cut down a 6 in wide tree branch with the saw back. such power in such a small, cheap knife i love it
Sep 14, 2016

Bought when it was on sale for $9.99. It's a good solid knife, and the sheath it great. Wasn't very sharp out of the box, and had a rounded tip. I had mine professionally sharpened for $5, now it's a BEAST! Definitely worth $10 or $20.

Another awesome knife by United Cutlery. Sharp. Thick. Functional sawback. Heavy too. Love the hard plastic sheath. And for ten bucks, it can't be beat. Get it while you can! Thanks BudK!
May 26, 2016

The sheath mine came in is black lol. Solid knife came razor sharp and I love the serrations on the back I would definitely buy again

When I opened this knife package, I was floored!! This knife is solid and a work of art! The non-slip rubberized grip and steel pommel is an amazing fit to my hand. The blade was sharp but as with all my knifes i honned it to a razors edge. I have put it to use and so far it has stayed very sharp. The saw back is very aggressive on both green & cured wood. I love the oversized blade too. The sheath is also awsome! You can affix or remove the sheath from your belt, without removing your belt. The blade holding straps can be opened silently (different from others). I can tell you i am extremely happy with this. knife. And for 10$, you can't go wrong!! I like it so much that i plan on buying a few more for gifts and another to put aside for my grandsons collection. I would highly recommend getting a few of these (one for using and one for your collection) before there gone. I know it's long review, but i wanted to tell everyone how much i liked it and I'm sure you will to... Tks for reading, signed HS

For under $10 I don't know what more you can ask for. The blade is heavy and sharp making it great for just about everything. The sheath and handle and well made and above anything you would find for this price.

Nice medium size, light, good balance, excellent thumb and finger guard, serrations on top of blade are no joke, pommel is metal with a hex head bolt arrangement ... wouldn't want to get backhanded with it ... grip is textured plastic with a good shape you could easily wrap grip fabric or tape around it. The sheath, in my opinion, is excellent for so few $$$. Knife slides in easily, is gripped well, and includes straps to secure the knife handle without using buckles ... instead you plug 2 straps together, and use a 3rd retainer strap to keep them together. There are more straps at top for hitching around a belt ... again 2 straps and a retainer. You can add your own straps to the sheath body for legs or attaching to tactical vests, etc. Mine came all black, love it, for me a very good purchase.

Just bought this knife. I wasn't expecting too much, but I've had great luck with M48 in the past. I was looking for a tactical knife to be part of a tactical handgun rig, just in case, strictly for home defense, hope to never need it. Knife itself is nice, not too heavy, not too light, 7 inch blade, good balance, big enough, but not too big. Serrations are the real deal (nasty) not decoration, thumb guard is excellent, as is the lower index finger guard which allows for a forward position under the blade, and a rear position behind the guard (see photo). My handle came black (some photos look green), and is a good shape with decent textured plastic grip, easily wrapped with tennis or racquetball grip tape if you want to enlarge/soften the grip. The pommel is black metal and a large hex head bolt seems to be used to tighten the whole assembly, it's quite rugged and I like it. If you backhand someone with the pommel, they're going to feel it, badly. I mention it because you may not see it from the photos. My purchase included a wrist lanyard threaded through the pommel, which I love, 3 or 4 turns does it around your wrist. The Sheath is outstanding ... many knives come with crap sheaths ... this one is solid plastic, the blade goes in 'snug', it is flat to lay against the leg, with a leg lanyard. Also, there are retaining straps for the knife handle, and retaining straps by the pommel area meant to go around a belt. These straps are a little 'different' but with a couple minutes of practice, quite workable ... two straps 'mate' (for the handle and/or belt) and a third strap plugs into and secures the other two using a slot. At first, seems goofy, but it works ... pushing 3rd strap out frees the retention straps immediately. In addition to the lanyards and sheath straps, there are also strap openings on the sheath itself for an even more secure attachment to leg, or possibly equipment like a tactical vest (see photos). Looks like you could go up to 3/4 inch straps of your own choice, no problem. Hope this helps, cheers ;-)

I have this one in my bug-out bag...ready to go. It came sharp and strong. I like the teeth on the top near the handle. Very useable, with a good edge...not just " decoration". The sheath could be a little better constructed though. The locking straps are kind of hard to manipulate in releasing the handle. Otherwise, an excellent piece of cutlery for the price. I have not been disappointed !
Aug 26, 2015

I bought this knife awhile ago when they were full price. I like the feel of it. Heavy duty and not bad on keeping an edge. All around good utility knife for a large (AND inexpensive) fixed blade knife. I do admit I REALLY like Bud K/CH Kadel's for their inexpensive and quite serviceable products. Over the years I have spent a lot of money with them and have continued to be happy with all my purchases.
Apr 24, 2015

Always out of the bargain stuff,,,,,BUDK.....stands for But U don't Kare Always have the high priced USA made stuff though
Apr 05, 2015

I can't vouch for the strength of the blade nor the durability of staying sharp but it is a good looking knife. I happened to donate it for a range prize and hope the new owner has many good years of usefulness. The lanyard if used properly will keep the M48 from falling overboard while fishing but it doesn't look like it would thin slice a tomato very well. Overall, it was well worth the price.
Mar 31, 2015

Not just a decent knife for the price, a decent knife all around. It's heavy duty but not too bulky, very versatile, great for outdoor use. I don't know why anyone has a problem sharpening this blade - maybe they are using the wrong sharpener or just don't know what they're doing - but I don't have any issues keeping my blade sharp. It comes with a sturdy sheath. All in all a pretty sweet deal!
Mar 31, 2015

Like everything I've bought from Budk and the M48 line, I'm very pleased. My sons were jealous of the knives I've ordered and needed some good (& inexpensive knives, they can break a boulder with a wink) to begin their collections. These were perfect. I bought 4 and will probably get a few more for gifts for family.
Mar 15, 2015

I have four adult children. I got a M48 Tactical Commando knife for each. I think this is an excellent knife for out doors camping or similar uses. AUS-8 stainless steel is a good functional steel for a knife. Oh yes, I have two of these for myself! Doc Joe

I was a little nervous that the blade would bend or snap. But after a little i was choping sawing and whittling every branch i found. And its still sharp. the blade is rock hard. its a grate survival knife. Its a reliable knife and shipping was really fast thanks budk for selling this beast :)
Feb 10, 2014

This is a wonderful knife to take with you hunting or backpacking. I used mine to cut rope/cord/twine as well as small branches plus a bit of whittling. the sheath, however, really sell the knife. where the blade slides in, is a snug fit which means you can hold it upside down and the knife does not slip out. the other positive point is the way you can attach this to your belt without undoing your belt. when you see how, it makes you wonder why they didn't think of this years/decades ago. Get this knife!
Dec 22, 2017

When I got this knife I was a bit disappointed because the top blade was not even sharp even though is shows it as sharp in the picture. The actual blade was decently sharp and the serrations were great. It's a pretty solid knife two. The best part is the sheath though.
Mar 25, 2017

just got this in the mail today....freeking awesome...blade is sharp as shit...sheath is dope...only issue is the blade has a dull point...but i got a guy for that....another score for budk....
Aug 22, 2016

a really good knife for the price im so glad i got it the sawback works amazingly the blade came sharp it works with hacking things but the handle gave me a blister on my thumb after 10-15 minutes of using im going to paracord wrap it and it should be great, sheath works great
Aug 13, 2016

Bought one of these to add to my"collection." It's good for a beater knife, only don't beat it up too much because it won't take a pounding very well. For the price it's not a bad deal, but remember, you get what you pay for!
Aug 06, 2016

The knife is nice and weighty, and the saw is great. However, it's not very sharp.
Jul 04, 2016

Very much like the knife and bought 2 of them for under ten bucks apiece. Pros: Love the look, feel and sheath. Very well built. Cons: Blades were not sharp. During manufacture, one side was ground more than the other, causing the edge to roll. Had to remove the existing edge to remove the roll and start from scratch. This took several hours per blade, because this steel is hard to work. Sharpened with a Smith Sharpening System and you can now shave with both of them.
Mar 29, 2015

The knife is a good heavy duty outdoor knife. We use it for camping, fishing and at work in lawn maintenance
Feb 22, 2015

I love this knife, the blade is very sturdy, love the looks of it, and it is very durable...The best knife for cutting, hacking and all around camping use...At this price it`s my choice for best in class...
Nov 18, 2014

I waited a while to write a review so that I could fully use the knife before rating it. I have had the knife about 2 months, and have only had to sharpen it 3 times after very, very extensive use. Mine did not come sharp out of the box, but whether or not it is sharp out of the box is just a game of chance. Once you sharpen it, it stays sharp for a long time. You can use it for cutting cord, chopping small trees, sawing branches, with the surprisingly useful sawback, or even chopping kindling for a campfire. I did notice that after very heavy use that the blade started to come loose a little, but this is easily fixed by tightening the allan screw on the pommel of the knife. Over all a good knife. And it is only $20. So i would suggest this knife to a friend, and i suggest that you get this knife
Jun 25, 2016

i got this knife in the mail and upon inspection it met all requirements. It is a solid knife, very sharp, and one that seems to be very durable. My friends and I were messing around with it and within five minutes, a piece of the handle broke off. it does not really affect the knife, other than the knife wiggles in the handle a little bit. I am still giving it three stars because other than the small break off, it was still a great knife.
May 07, 2016

I really like the design and it feels good in the hand. Not to heavy. The only problem I had with the knife was that it was not sharp. Tried cutting paper and it didn't even make a scratch. The serrated top of the blade, however, was sharp. I can sharpen the blade, no big deal. I like the sheath. Can be, easily, carried around my chest while out in the field. The price was right for the what I purchased.
Mar 24, 2015

so far very pleased, wish I'd known about you guys sooner. great prices. I've checked out a couple of your competitors, was no need, you're the man!will be doing more business with YOU! only problem I have is with the shipping, little unclear who & when. also I could shop you're specials all month but am on fixed budget and only get paid around the 2nd. of the month.
Feb 18, 2014

this knife comes out of the package with no edge whatsoever. However, after sharpening, it holds its edge very well. the sheath is great, it holds the knife securely, even without the strap being done. Overall a good knife.
May 17, 2017

came s harp but after batoning some wood the handle cracked..most likely because it's cheap plastic - nice blade tho
Aug 05, 2019

NO! This is a cheap, sub-par knife & sheath. Instead, save yourself some considerable $$ and order item # 17 DF4363 which is EXACTLY THE SAME knife/sheath (minus the super-cheesy M48 branding) and which goes for $13.99 regularly BUT is on sale on the date of this review for $7.98!! If you want a crummy knife and sheath, that is. Really, really unhappy that I threw away money on this one :(
