The Cold Steel Kobun takes its namesake from the Japanese martial where the word "Kobun" means, "soldier." It's a fitting name for a knife like the Kobun, which was effectively designed to be "a good soldier." It sports a thinner blade that is 5 1/2" long, making it the perfect lightweight boot knife. It features the Tanto-styled reinforced point. This contrasts sharply with most boot knives on the market today that are notorious for their paper-thin points, which are easily broken or bent. The Kobun's point is highly resistant to bending or breaking because it is reinforced by the full thickness of the blade's spine which runs almost to the very tip of the blade. The Kobun's deeply checkered 4 3/8" Kraton handle is designed to offer minimum bulk with maximum grip. Its cross section was made as thin as possible (approximately 1/2 inch), then contoured to resist turning or shifting in the hand. The Kobun comes complete with a Secure- Ex sheath. 9 7/8" overall.

I purchased one of these Cold Steel Kobun's from True Swords about three years ago and decided to give a review based on my experience with it. This is one of my favorite EDC knives, in fact, so much so that I made a professional quality, adjustable nylon shoulder harness for it (the harness will actually hold any knife with hollow rivets in its sheath). The entire knife, including the sheath has stood the test of time, and I use my EDC knives a lot. The blade hasn't much of a belly, but that doesn't hinder it from cutting enormously well which can, in part, be attributed to its deep hollow grind. It came razor sharp right out of the box. The tip is very strong because it's nearly the same width as the spine. The handle is very comfortable and I've yet to have a problem with it slipping from my hands. The hand gaurd is just large enough to prevent one's hands from sliding up the blade. The belt clip is hooked, which prevents the sheath from being pull free from a belt, boot or waist band while drawing the knife. The knife clips in and out of the sheath fairly easily, but I've no worries of it ever just falling out. Overall, it's lightweight, slender enough for concealed carry, strong, dependable and definitely a great utility knife as well as a great self defense or backup knife. TThiso top it all off, it's full tang. It's a great knife at a great price. Lyle D. Yates-Master Instructor (retired).
