Cane is excellent quality. Haven't used the sword part but nice to know it's there. Use the cane every day. Super sturdy and comfortable. Highly recommend.
During recovery from an ankle fracture and two hip replacements, I felt vulnerable. This swordcane worked as an excellent cane and the sword is certainly a formidable defensive weapon. No rattles and the grip is firmly secured to the tang. It came pretty sharp but on my downtime I used a diamond sharpener to produce a nice slicing edge. BTW, the last 6” or so is double edged. This is a very nice tool.
Master: Zatoichi would approve of this Cane-Sword!??????????????????????????????????Highly Recommend! It would ??if Cold Steel made this in Damascus SanMai! ??
This cane is awesome. Just the right length and a little heavy but I like them like that. More sturdy. The handle is a little small but useable. The rubber tip is too slippery on some flooring surfaces like tile and other smooth surfaces. I want to change the rubber tip but it's very hard to get off for me. Other than that it's great. Sword blade is very sharp and not too heavy but sturdy. Good peace of mind for us oldsters.
If you want a sturdy cane with a little extra weight (the blade) this is great. I had to cut the sheath down because I'm short but other than being a little rattled it is great. I have two of them and carry my spare in the car.
I initially purchased a Kit Rae Axios forged sword cane. I choose it over the Cold Steel Heavy Dury because of the heavy handle and locking scabbard for situations where striking with the handle would be needed. But after just 2 weeks of use... It started falling apart. However, Budk with it's superb customer service .exchanged it without question for this one at no cost to me.
I was looking at the Knight Watchman heavy duty but had read that SK5 carbine (which is around 1080 carbine steel) is not desired for sword material due to it being less flexable than lower carbine steel making it more brittle but is excellent for knife building and able to maintain a super edge. So this brought me back to the Cold Steel Heavy Duty with it's 1055 carbine blade. (1060 cabine is the optimal for swords.)
As stated in other reviews the tip is made of plastic and is slick on some surfaces. The reason I think is that this cane is designed as a weapon first in mind. A soft rubber tip would not be as durable as the plastic one for striking.
The tip is also glued in place for durability plus the scabbard has a drain tube that goes through the tip so if the tip wasn't glued in place and rigid...the tube would dislodge from the hole in the tip.
But I sacrificed durability for functionality and cut off the tip (which took some effort with a sharp box cutter and a small flat tip screwdriver) and replaced it with a 7/8" rubber tip and now it is perfect.
The blade is wicked sharp straight out of the box. The "O" rings are in great shape and allows for easy withdrawal of the blade from the scabbard. If the scabbard is as tuff as a demo video I saw of the Knight Watchman Heavy Duty where the guy was wacking the crap out of stuff with the scabbard without warpage, this will be an awesome weapon. Just don't trust weilding it for a handle strike because the blade will come out of the scabbard. Very pleased with it and would recommend it without hesitation.
Pretty much what others say. Mine came with fine o rings, others say theirs came in bad shape, but mine were fine. More stabby than slicey, but it slices cardboard box well. You may want to check state laws before carrying it around. Feel much better put together than a wall hanger.
I bought one of these canes, years ago
I maintain it about once a month and haven't had a problem yet with it. I keep it next to my bed, when I am not using it. Only issue is the rubber toe. It's very rigid and is prone to slip. Other than that it's perfect, would buy again if I ever need one.
Excellent blade. Also wonderful cane for a disabled veteran. I hope I will never need it but glad I have it and have other cold steel blades that are awesome too.
Love this one. Combat ready. The grip survived a Staffordshire terrier that loved plastic.
Once the rubber O-rings that hold the sword in the shaft wear out it's basically broken. I've been every hardware store in town. Now I'm trying to file it to fit the O-rings that I could find that were close to the right size. Other than that it's a work of art
Once again budk and cold steel delivers another great item. It was shipped to my home in 4 days. This sword came sharp and it's very sturdy happy marine corp bday to me.
Nice cane and looks very durable but the guy in the video needs to hit the gym.
I had read all of the past reviews and was prepared for what to expect; the rattle of the sword in the sheath, dried / broken o-rings, hard to pull the sword out and slippery cane tip.. What I received instead was darn near perfect. The o-rings are in great condition with a slight lubrication making it easy to remove and insert. (Give the handle a slight twist when removing and reinserting will make it very easy.) There is no rattle in the cane at all and I discovered why. I had to cut off about two inches from the bottom to get the best length for me. They have installed a short plastic sheath in the bottom to keep the sword tip from rattling around. The hard rubber tip seems to be okay, but I replaced it when I shortened the tube length. The tip is glued on, I think, and had to be replaced anyway.
The sword itself is very sharp (can easily cut you) without being too sharp (the edge isn't easily chipped). The tube sheath is fairly thick walled and heavy enough to be used as a club.
Like I said - darn near perfect.
The blade is very sharp and the housing is stout, I wrapped mine with a leather hand grip and attached a lanyard to the sword for my wrist. I did however replace the foot on the bottom as it is hard plastic and is tends to slip, I put one made of rubber from a crutch on it... it is a much safer cane now..... be careful when you pull it out and put it back in, do so with a twist so the O-rings do not get messed up... I let a friend look at it and he promptly destroyed one of the O-rings.... I replaced it with a silicone one and use a compatible lube on it. I own many swords this one is the sharpest right out of the box.... and well worth the money.
After reading some of the reviews for this sword cane I was anxious to receive mine. I was not disappointed - it is Cold Steel quality. Nice solid unassuming cane. Blade is razor sharp. O-rings were well lubed. Everything you would expect from this manufacturer. I weigh 220 lbs. and am able to put my full weight on the cane with no issues. The blade would slice paper. The only drawbacks - this cane is somewhat heavy - I do not think it could have the same quality and be much lighter though. The tip could be a little better but is more than I expected based on other reviews. The one thing I'd like to see added is some type of lanyard. THere is a small hole through the front edge of the handle to add your own but it would be nice to have one included.
Had this cane/sword for two years. Just put a little Vaseline on the o-rings every six months and they work perfectly. I spray mine with Break Free CLP twice a year and leave it on when I put it in the cane. Not a speck of rust anywhere.
I am a disabled vet with back problems about 250 pounds and very often I put my full weight on this cane. It still looks brand new except for the tip. That is a normal wear item on any cane.
I am not associated with Cold Steel in any way and received nothing from them for this review. I just want other folks to know what a great value this cane/sword represents. John Gafford
I received my cane and am happy with it. A thing to note: the O rings were shot the first time I drew the sword. I was expecting this from previous reviews and was prepared for it. I went to the hardware store and purchased #14 rings which work well. I may try #15 since they are slightly thicker.
Another thing. This cane was designed for someone very tall. I'm 5'8 and also was prepared for this. A fix that I'm going to need to get assistance with as I don't want to cut the shaft myself and risk damage.
Now, on to the smell.....I've heard different options for this from spraying some sort of air freshner inside to putting a dryer sheet inside the shaft. I don't think putting anything with a water base is a good idea inside the shaft rather an oil base as in WD40 or other spray lubricant would work better.
Other then the above and, with a little tweaking I feel that this will work out well.
It only took 3 days for it to arrive at my door and that's fast for BUDK not to mention I got my initials engraved in it and it looks real good its in perfect shape I have no complaints the o rings r fine and the blade is sharp but u have to kind of break it in when u get it I had to pull it in and out of the staff a few times for it to get easier hard to explain but its cold steel you won't be disappointed its very nice and now my favorite sword I own I give it 5 stars!!!!!
At first sight ... I was certain that it was not 1055 high carbon steel, as it was polished to an exceptionally bright mirror finish. However, upon testing the blade's resilience (a tad of bending), it proved, to me at least (I took it to almost 45 degrees) that it was high carbon spring steel. The O rings that create the suction were in perfect condition (some reviews have stated that theirs were dry). I did apply some additional plumber's silicon (90% pure), just for giggles and grins.
My only complaint is that the blade seemed a bit on the dull side. However, it is easily sharpened.
The cane is quite rugged and stable. I would assume that it could easily support the weight of a 250 pounder. The scabbard (?) portion of the cane is exceedingly solid and, in and of itself, wouldn't make that bad of a cudgel ... just a touch light for that. But, none the less quite robust.
I'm giving it five stars ... nothing else to add.
